COSTA RICA WORKSHOP
FEBRUARY 7-14, 2009

‘Sweet journey to heavenly COSTA RICA’

Ashtanga Yoga Retreat with Joanne & Mark DARBY

Montezuma, COSTA RICA

Immerse yourself deeply in the Ashtanga Yoga practice with Joanne & Mark Darby.
Enjoy an unforgettable retreat at Hotel Los Mangos, facing the waves of the Pacific Ocean,
in the secluded village of Montezuma, on the Western shores of Costa Rica.
Montezuma
is nested in the southern Nicoya Peninsula, and is surrounded by a bountiful rainforest,
unspoiled beaches and breathtaking waterfalls.
Travelers “in the know” enjoy this quaint and adventure loving town not only for its eclectic shops
and fresh food eateries but especially for the outskirts of the town and the nearby nature reserve.
Costa Rica is an important natural resources pillar,
well- known for its abundant wild life and extensive protected areas.

*

Yoga & Meditation

Your one-week retreat includes daily Ashtanga Yoga and meditation classes.
The practice, along with a deepening awareness of the breath, will restore and purify the body,
leaving the mind balanced, focused, and awakening insight into the true nature of reality.
Classes will be held in an open, wooden- floored pavilion overlooking the pool as well as the Pacific Ocean!
You will get the chance to deeply relax with the sound of the ocean’s waves cresting
upon one another and the breezy palm trees rustling overhead.

*

Hotel Los Mangos

We will be staying at the beautiful Hotel Los Mangos, located on the beach,
just a few minutes by walk from Montezuma.
Rooms and bungalows are set in a mango orchard,
looking out to the ocean! Embrace the serene atmosphere of the exotic garden,
the view on the pool and stunning sunsets on the Pacific.

Breakfast will be served in a vegetarian restaurant, Organico,
and dinner will be provided in the best restaurant, Playa de Los Artistas, located on the ocean front.
The restaurant has been mentioned 3 years in a row by the New York Times
as one of the best places in Costa Rica, serving delicious food!

*

Local Activities

Montezuma is very close to a large natural beach reserve and to wildlife refuges
(Cabo Blanco National Parks, Curù wildlife reserve or the Nicolás Wessberg Absolute Natural Reserve)
where you will find secluded natural pools and spectacular waterfalls
and where you can witness hordes of monkeys, red and black mo-hawked squirrels,

The initial emphasis will be to give you the inspiration to take your practice to a much deeper level, and to create an environment that is conducive to learning.

First will be a self evaluation, making it clear where each student stands, as to make the next step possible…to a conscious evolution. The principles learnt will be basic to asana but they are also fundamental to such approach as dance and martial arts.
Yogic &Taoist Philosophy as the basis or inspiration to your approach.
Breath & Vinyasa- Learning the mechanism of breath and its affect on the physical body, on the emotional body, and on the mental body.
Bandha & posture- Optimizing and understanding bandhas and their affect on one’s body. Bringing this understanding to the various asanas with a clear purpose of circulating the energy flow in the body.
Drishti-  Bringing the state of mind that makes yoga a transformative process.
Nutrition/ayurveda/herbology/living foods. Mixing ancient and modern views on this subject. (Guest speaker)
Anatomy- Learning very specific anatomy that goes along with the course content. Basic anatomy will be part of the suggested readings. (Guest speaker)

Chanting- We will explore several aspects of  the voice and its use in breaking through blockages in the body. (Guest speaker)
Meditation- Bringing a meditative state to all our practices, various approaches will be explored.

-The second aspect of the training will involve gaining the confidence and developing the skills that will allow you to transmit your own experience through:

Darby has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga for over 25 years.
He began with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the master of Ashtanga Yoga, in 1979
when he spent four years in Mysore, India.
He is one of the few teachers worldwide who has attained the highest level of
Ashtanga Yoga teaching accreditation and is certified by
Pattabhi Jois to teach the original Ashtanga method.

Darby's teaching is dynamic and direct while giving students
the essence of the energy of this yoga. His wisdom and warmth attract
a vibrant community of students who are drawn to his humor,
his attentive nature and his steadfast commitment to improving
each student's physical alignment.
Darby gives workshops all over Europe, Canada and the United States
He also spends few months a year with his master in Mysore.

Shankara was born in India and his upbringing immersed him in yoga all his life.
His travels at young age opened his mind to a wide range of different philosophy.
In his practice and teaching, he merges the principles of Ashtanga, Iyegar, viniyoga
and many other body awareness techniques from east and west.
Demonstrating how the practice relates to all aspects of one's being,
his ultimate goal is to give students the confidence to wholly dive
into this way of life: Yoga
